These workshops fall into three main categories: <strong>study skills\/testing<\/strong>, <strong>reading\/writing, <\/strong>and <strong>math\/technology<\/strong>. In addition, we can work with you to create instruction that is tailored to your specific pedagogical goals.&nbsp;To schedule a workshop, please <em><strong>click<\/strong><\/em> on the workshop below and fill out a quick form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/introduction-to-the-learning-center-and-the-testing-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Introduction to the Learning Center and the Testing Center<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This recently revamped overview of support services begins with a fun group activity that demonstrates the power and efficiency of some well-timed learning support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/canvas-basics-beyond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canvas Basics &amp; Beyond<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This workshop has been designed to help students navigate and utilize Canvas. We will cover the basics of setting notifications, navigating courses, communicating with instructors, and submitting assignments. There will be time for questions. <strong>30 minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/preparing-for-the-unexpected\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Preparing for the Unexpected<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This workshop will help students learn to be resilient in the face of unexpected change. Topics covered include communication, technology, time management, academic support, self-care, motivation, and community resources.<strong> 30 minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Study Skills\/Test Taking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/defeating-distractors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Defeating Distractors<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this workshop, students will begin with a self-assessment to determine their personal tendency to become bored. After the self-assessment, they will discover their personal distractors, discuss boredom busters, and practice monitoring concentration while reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/memory-magic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Memory Magic<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this workshop, students will discover how memory works, take a memory survey, and practice some proven memory-enhancing techniques. <strong>30 minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/the-science-of-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>How You Learn: And How it Should Change Your Behavior <\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this workshop, students learn what brain science tells us will improve their study habits and chances for academic success. Students will discover how their brain remembers information, consider complicating factors that improve their odds for success, and have opportunities to review and discuss some strategies to enhance their learning. Can be customized to fit anywhere from <strong>40-80 minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/test-taking-tips-and-tricks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Test-Taking Tips and Tricks<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will begin this workshop with a test-taking self-assessment, followed by a discussion of proven test-taking strategies. Next, they will assess their levels of test anxiety, discover coping skills, and learn how to deal effectively with various kinds of test questions, including multiple-choice, true-false, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and essay questions. We will also discuss the post-test analysis and how to recover from difficult test-taking experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/learning-from-mistakes-conducting-post-test-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Learning from Mistakes: Conducting Post-Test Analysis<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, exams don\u2019t go as well as planned. When that happens, it can be helpful to try a self-analysis to identify ways to better prepare for the next exam. In this workshop, we will provide students with self-assessment tools to help with this process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/hands-on-workshop-stop-procrastinating-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hands-On Workshop-Stop Procrastinating Today<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This hands-on workshop will help students to tame procrastination. During this session, students will consider the causes of procrastination and learn to tame procrastination. The hands-on activity will ask students to make an &#8220;unschedule.&#8221; We will also take a look at some apps and programs that help with procrastination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This presentation will require a whole class period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reading\/Writing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/reading-for-college-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Reading for College Success<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Often students feel overwhelmed by the amount of material contained in course readings. They may have difficulty deciding what\u2019s important, struggle with comprehension, or not realize how much time engaging with texts will take. This workshop provides practical strategies to help students read more effectively. These strategies can increase student confidence, enhance performance on assignments and exams and their overall college success. <strong>30 minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/revise-like-a-pro-reverse-outlining\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Revise Like a Pro<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this workshop, we guide students through the revision process to clarify the differences between revising, editing, and proofreading. The workshop then demonstrates a variety of skills and strategies students can pick from to manage their writing practices. <strong>30 minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/the-basics-of-apa-formatting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>The Basics of APA Formatting<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This workshop is an introduction to the basic rules of APA formatting, including general formatting, creating a title page, using headings, and utilizing sources for in-text citations and the reference page. <strong>30 minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/the-basics-of-mla-formatting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>The Basics of MLA Formatting<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This workshop is an introduction to the basic rules of MLA formatting, including general formatting, introducing sources, using in-text citations, and creating works cited entries. <strong>30 minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0Math\/Technology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/graphing-calculator-workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Graphing Calculator Workshop<\/strong><\/a>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some students enter the listed courses with familiarity with graphing calculators while others have never used one before. This workshop is intended as an introductory resource for students who are not familiar or slightly familiar with graphing calculators. Students will have an opportunity to learn and practice using their graphing calculator as a tool and use it for their coursework. Geared towards students taking Contemporary Math, College Algebra\/Precalculus, and Statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/dimensional-analysis-unit-conversion-workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dimensional Analysis (Unit Conversion) Workshop<\/strong><\/a>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This workshop is a review of how to convert units using the metric system or convert from English to metric systems using dimensional analysis. The workshop is geared toward students taking science (Chemistry, Physics, etc.) but can be modified to address conversions in many other courses. <strong>30 minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faculty Workshops<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/uFCPF2XU8Wg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Design for Accessibility in Canvas:<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This video will give you an overview of some best practices for making your Canvas shell and content more accessible. When teaching and putting materials online, we want to be cognizant and abide by the provisions of The Americans with Disabilities Act as much as possible. This will hopefully open the door for more discussion and research into what your Canvas shell is like and whether we are meeting ALL our students where they are.
