{"id":5269,"date":"2025-12-12T13:05:38","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T19:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/?page_id=5269"},"modified":"2025-12-12T13:05:38","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T19:05:38","slug":"online-learning-myths-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.eastcentral.edu\/learning-center\/learning-resources\/online-learning-myths-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Online Learning Myths"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>MYTH #1:<\/strong> Online Classes are way easier!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FACTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Online courses have the same workload as in-person courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More reading is required in online courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assume you will need <strong>9-15 hours per class, per week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MYTH #2:<\/strong> You can finish work early in an online class and be done for the semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FACTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Course formats vary. Some teachers will open the entire course, but others will choose to open one week at a time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The expectations will be the same as in-person classes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will get out of a course what you put into it. Don\u2019t rush!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MYTH #3:<\/strong> I can hide in an online course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FACTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Interaction will still be required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professors get reports showing the quantity and quality of your participation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can still build meaningful relationships in an online course, but only if you participate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MYTH #4:<\/strong> I spend a lot of time talking to friends on social media, and I text often. I don\u2019t need to learn any technical skills to take an online course. Plus, my instructor will help me figure out any technical issues, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FACTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Canvas, our Course Management System, is user-friendly. However, you will need to be sure you have a good grasp of the technology you will need.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not attempt to take a class on your phone. While Canvas can be accessed on your phone to \u201ccheck in,\u201d not all functions are available in the online app. Canvas is optimized for computers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can check out a computer at the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø library.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MYTH #5:<\/strong> Email is basically instant, and my teacher checks her email all of the time. So if I have a last-minute question or don&#8217;t understand an assignment, I can just email her and she should respond right away. She&#8217;s definitely up at 10 PM, and it only takes two minutes to respond with an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FACTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instructors will provide a maximum email turnaround time, but <strong>24-48 hours<\/strong> is typical.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plan ahead!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create alternate solutions, just in case your question is not answered in time.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Learning Center<\/strong>:<br>636-584-6688<br>general_tutoring@eastcentral.edu<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Canvas Support:<\/strong><br>636-234-3350<br>onlinehelp@eastcentral.edu<br>TEXT: 636-388-8281<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connect with other students. Consider forming a discussion group using GroupMe or some similar platform.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Myth #6:<\/strong> If I didn&#8217;t finish my assignment on time, I can just say my computer crashed, or I deleted my file or I sent the wrong attachment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your instructors have heard all of these excuses before!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be sure you fully understand the instructor\u2019s expectations in advance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create checklists or calendars to track assignments.
