Categories

Children’s books are shelved by broad category or award nomination and then alphabetically by first three letters of author’s last name.

Adventure – This section has stories about faraway lands including space, magical creatures, monsters, princesses, pirates, robots and technology. 

Celebrations – This section includes books about holidays, parties and special events.

  • Includes traditional holidays such as, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, St Patrick’s Day, Jewish holidays and more ….
  • Weddings

  • Mother’s Day, Father’s Day
  • Chinese New Year, Cinco de Mayo

Concepts – This section has books designed to introduce young children to basic ideas.

Nature – This section includes books about animals, seasons, solar system, weather and our natural world.

  • Only books with animals doing animal-like things (no anthropomorphism)
  • Pets are included in this section

Our Past – This section includes books about the history of the United States and social issues.

Ourselves – This section includes books about the relationships and important milestones.

  • Body parts (eyes, nose, fingers, toes)
  • Emotions (fear, worry, anger, sadness)
  • Conduct of life or etiquette
  • Family situations & relationships (going to visit grandparents, parental love, homosexuality, adoption, death, divorce, birth, etc.)
  • Health and hygiene (people with disabilities, ADHD, autism, potty training, etc.)

People – This section contains biographies and books about people who work in a community (teacher, fire fighter, doctor, etc.).

Places – This section includes the history and geography of countries other than the United States.

Stories – This section includes popular series and great read aloud stories.

Caldecott Medal & Honor – National award that honors the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Coretta Scott King – National award that promotes understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream by African American authors.

Missouri Building Block – Missouri state award that is voted the most popular by preschool children in Missouri’s public libraries and is designed to encourage reading aloud to children.

Newbery Medal & Honor – National award that honors the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Show-Me Reader Award – Missouri state award with purpose to promote literature, literacy, and reading in grades one through three in Missouri elementary schools and to promote recognition of authors and illustrators of books that are favorites of these children.
